Those wacky roleplayers

(~1999-ish)

While I've only been roleplaying for about three or four years, I feel as if I've collected a respectable number of friends through the activity, and even dragged some existing ones into it. And here's the lowdown on them, though it can't get all that juicy, because who knows when they might find this place.

Note - July 31, 2002

I'm lazy. This part never got updated. There are many things written below that I was writing to be politic at the time; roleplaying only works when you have a good covenant with the people you're playing with. There are many things written below that seem as if another, much younger than 3 years younger, me wrote them. There are many people who I adore to play with who are not listed here, and may never be. This page shall stand, un-updated, a quiet reminder to myself.

Note - January 12, 2006

Last names neutralized, which I really should have done years and years and years ago. Of course, this page has always been a bit questionable, but I'm resistant to nuking it altogether.

Gerald ?

Gerald's too quiet! Wang seemed really cool and Arienhod wishes she'd talked to him more, but the mass press of PCs kind of obscured Gerald, who seems too polite to just yell out what he's doing like the rest of us.

Bryce B

I've been told by other parties that my brother roleplays decently, but I've never seen it. I get to say this because he's my brother. He has too much of a hard time throwing himself into character, though I suspect a lot of that might be Matt's influence. I've only seen the two of them together, and I get mighty tired mighty quick of Homie G Ronin Dogg.

Christine B

If she sees that "Christine" she'll kill me. Chris's Isawa shugenja and Liuko developed a very close friendship, and I really miss her characters' quiet fortitude (I can't believe I used that word). She plays a pooka scarily well for someone who also plays mystics so well.

Drory B-M

A pyro wild-mage is guaranteed for fun. Especially when the personality behind it has seen Clerks a tad too many times. The most normal of all the people I've roleplayed with, Drory has actually had a blind date. Or at least had one scheduled... His grumpy dwarf Us'l is a crack-shot anyone would be happy to have by their side (even if he wasn't supposed to be there that day).

Aaron B

Any guy who names his character with a word that sounds exactly like the Japanese word for "noodle" has got to be a good guy, even if he didn't mean to do it. Udann and Arina were the most compatible pair of characters in that AD&D game, which could be explained in game terms as being due to his extremely high Charisma of 8 and the fact that she was the only girl. Or perhaps it was just because Aaron's a cool guy. Let's call it the second.

Ken B

Ken is a freak. A lecherous one. I'm just waiting for the Dreamspeaker to start hitting on Arienhod... But he's nice, and extremely amusing to roleplay with. But a lecherous Ise zumi was just strange, and even though I'm not playing with Pepe in 7th Sea, one session of watching was... interesting. AND HAY. I didn't mean this to sound as mean as it apparently sounded! Ken Is Cool!

Kyle B

Okay, Kyle "Size 15 Feet" B has earned the Grand Jen Seal of Approval, granted to those roleplayers with a true community spirit. Kyle's always willing to combine his powers with his fellow characters, boosting, supporting, and always resulting in an effect that's spectacular beyond what we may have dreamed of without his enthusiastic help.

Jeff C

"Me me me me me! I do {fill in the blank}," yelled out, hand waving, might be annoying, coming from anyone else. But Jeff's so earnest, and his smile is just too infectious to be irritating. I only got two sessions in with him before Mage ended, so I shall just say that Jeff's duality of confusion and hyperactivity was mightily entertaining.

Huston G

I haven't played with Huston a huge amount because he's tended to be in Jason's other groups, but when I have, there's not a whole lot to say. He plays his characters well, but similiar to how I play mine, there's not always a lot there. He's just very quiet.

Chris H

I've still only experienced Chris's roleplaying a few times, and wish it were more. His characters are imbued with his "I'm 6'7 and handsome and know it" confidence, and invariably remind me of Han Solo or Indiana Jones. That's definitely not a bad thing.

Tony H

There's not much to be said about Tony. He's just a little too weird. I think he was playing a Crab samurai, but he didn't stick his head outside of his sweatshirt hood enough to make much of a roleplaying impression. But then again, Tony's just like that, and always has been.

Scott K

Scott came late to the AD&D group, well into dysfunctionality. He puts up with crap thrown at him like a trooper, and gets into character with a steadfast resolve which can alternately be frustrating and rewarding. I'll miss getting to know Jacque better.

Franklin K

You meet people to roleplay with in the strangest places. Like a computer lab, where you only start talking to them because you see they're looking at a paintball website. And then they do strange things like invite you to play with their group, and not play themselves until the last session. Go figure o_O.

Jasson L

Jasson is the dice master. Nothing more can be said. He's just got an uncanny way with them, if you know what I mean.

*cough* *cough*

Christie M

Christi's two characters I've played with have been such opposites that I'm not sure what I can say about her style (not that I've been saying much about styles). Her Scorpion courtier and Liuko really didn't get along well, but her Kitsu Sodan-Senzo and Jitsuko giggled together like caffeine-buzzed schoolgirls. Go figure... and I hope I have the time to roleplay when I've got two children and a third coming.

Jason M

Christi's husband is silly. I'm sure there's more to him, but I just can't take any character of his seriously, which I suppose isn't necessarily bad. Especially when he's playing a very very very drunk Scorpion.

Wade N

Wade. Hmm. Wade is... well, Wade. He's very quiet, and very deliberate. His characters speak only when spoken to, and half the time, I'm not sure if he's been listening to what's been going on. I suppose every group needs its own space cadet.

Jason O

Jason was my second GM, and the one that truly converted me to roleplaying. When he's prepared, our sessions are fantastic no matter what the game. NPCs have depths I've not seen before or since (even if some of them are Japanese manservants named Nigel), and plots are intense. While his attention has a tendency to wander, and the ricepaste conversations often overwhelm the session, Jason's sheer genius at running L5R games is undeniable.

Roland R

My favorite German in the world, Roland started roleplaying with us by purest chance (read: the Microsoft public folders), and was with us for not long enough. He's retreated into that bastard European amusement "clubbing," but his Lion samurai was the perfect flip side to Yuuki; between the pair of them, we had the most representive example of Lion-ness you can imagine. (I know you're reading this, Roland. Don't think I don't... heh)

Mark R

Mark scares me. He's either really good at playing characters with a Charisma of 6, or really doesn't like me. I hope it's the first, since otherwise playing with him will get REALLY intimidating. Okay, so maybe he's just a kickass roleplayer, because Brother Valentine has won Kiera's undying loyalty.

Matt S

Matt, one of my friends from high school times, was my compatriot in the madness called Roleplaying With Howie (see Howie Zheng, below). Matt has an alarming propensity for playing really snooty female characters disturbingly well. Very disturbingly well.

Andrea S

Another strong-willed girl around takes some getting used to, but Andrea's fun to be around, so I roll with it. She games with a seriousness that makes it that much more amusing when Akala cocks her arm back and pops Alex in the jaw.

Ben S

"I'm an astronaut... haven't you heard of me?" Think hippie looking guy, ripped shorts, no shirt, sandals and a trumpet tied to his waist... walking into a crime scene and talking to the police. Philly Chaser is a nut. A certifiable police-Bronco stealing nut. Nuts are funny, though. "It's okay, I can do this, I've been to the moon!" (hehe)

Kevin S

Kevin "Twist The Rules" S is an awesome guy. Overlook his tendency to exploit the rules to make power characters, and you'll find a man more able to get himself into character than any I've ever seen. The "I'm being SUBTLE!!!" bellow will go down in my personal roleplaying memory as the most hilarious thing a Crab has ever ever said to me. And you have to have a soft spot in your heart for a Confederate priest who will not only bless your undead character with the protection of the Lord, but do it only because he has an in-character reason to do so.

Seth T

Seth has to be my all time favorite fellow gamer. He's played in all my games under Jason, and our characters have always gotten along perfectly. His stengths in roleplaying decisive characters make up for my tendencies towards vacillation, and we always end up complementing each other. Benkei and Liuko made a perfect team, and Yuuki and Liuko worked well together, even if he did kill that horse. And no, contrary to popular belief, Callie did not fall in love with Antoine Deveroux. She was just very fond of him. Very.

Kurtis W

I never actually roleplayed with Kurtis more than once or twice. But he looks enough like a Crab samurai to play the part well. Kurtis is a huge sweetheart, and don't let the shaved head (except the horns) and tattoos try to convince you otherwise.

Howie Z

Ahh Howie. My first GM. The only GM I've ever truly fought with. Howie and I had many "differences," especially concerning whether I could re-use arrows, and about my character's falcon. Which he eventually found a way to kill. Not that I'm bitter or anything. Really. Actually, I liked roleplaying with Howie. He made up a kickass weapon just for my Otaku Battle Maiden, and had the best NPC's ever, like the pair of Scorpion ninja bodyguards named Cabbage and Lettuce.

Joe Z

As my third GM and the GM who ushered me into the strange world of AD&D, Joe holds a special place in my heart. After all, he led me on my first dungeon crawl, orchestrated the events that led up to the entire game resting on my roll, and I'm certain he was behind the dice mojo that yielded that natural 20.
